Step 4: Make it enjoyable
We’ve looked at rallying your motivation, setting your objectives and doing something regularly.
Which brings us to how you keep going on your language journey: make it as enjoyable as possible.
Of course, not everything’s going to be entertaining – think irksome irregular verbs and tedious tenses.
But many learning tasks can be made fun
Choose a topic that interests you – art, basketball, cooking, hiking, history.
Make your MVA something pleasurable, like express writing or Scrabble.
Ensure your 5-a-day menu has a good mix of focused as well as fun tasks – watching Netflix, reading a fashion magazine, doing word puzzles.
Add a game element if that’s your thing. Try beating your word count in express writing or your points in Scrabble or the number of new words learnt or the amount of time spent reading.
Plus the anticipation of reaching your objectives can add to the fun, especially if a trip or a promotion are part of the deal you’ve made with yourself.
Keeping it fun means you’ll keep going on your language journey.
